The next tournament in Surat

Nothing announced yet — the next event is being planned

Our tournaments are announced a few weeks ahead on this page, on the events page, on Instagram, and in a WhatsApp update group we open for each tournament. Entries for the September 2026 Junior Rapid closed at 38 players and the July open at 75, so the next one will fill too.

Message us with the player's age and level and we will add you to the update group — no commitment, you simply hear first.

How entry works

Our events follow the same pattern each time, so parents know what to expect before the announcement lands.

Who can play

Open to all — no club membership needed. Junior events are split by age on the date of birth entered at registration (in 2026: Under 7, Under 11, Under 14). Open events welcome adults.

Format

Rapid chess, Swiss system, digital clocks on every board. The Junior Rapid used 15 minutes with a 5-second increment; the number of rounds depends on the field.

Entry fee and confirmation

Recent junior events cost ₹499 per player, paid on registration; your seat is confirmed when the payment lands. Entries close at the deadline or when the venue is full, whichever comes first.

Prizes at junior events

Trophies for the top three in every category, medals for the next places and best girl, and a certificate for every participant — every child leaves with something in their hand.

First time? Read the parent's guide to a first chess tournament — what to bring, how a Swiss works, and what to do between rounds.

Rated events beyond our own

Our tournaments are the friendly first step. To earn a FIDE rating a player needs FIDE-rated events, and Gujarat has a full calendar of them through the year — in Surat and in the other cities of the state. Students on the Queen and King plans are prepared specifically for these, and we tell families which events suit a player's level and when to enter.

Our students also play the open tournaments held in Surat by other organisers — the large photograph on our adults page is one of our adult students at such an open in July 2026.

  • Play & Learn Sundays, 2:00 to 4:00 PM: supervised, clocked games (one a month on the Rook Plan, two on the Queen Plan)
  • Notation and clock handling taught in class, so the hall holds no surprises
  • Event selection and preparation support from the coaches
  • Round-by-round WhatsApp support for King Plan players during major events

Chess tournaments in Surat — questions

When is the next chess tournament in Surat?
Our next event has not been announced yet. Tournaments are announced a few weeks ahead on this page, the events page and Instagram, and in a WhatsApp update group for the event. Message us and we will add you to the group.
Can a beginner play?
Yes, as long as they know the rules and can play a full game with a clock. Our junior events are built for first tournaments: friendly venue, categories by age, a certificate for everyone. Most of our students play their first event within about six months of starting — sooner for older beginners.
Does my child need to be a student of Surat Chess Club?
No. Our tournaments are open to all players in Surat and beyond; no membership is required.
Are your tournaments FIDE rated?
Not so far. Our 2026 events were unrated rapid tournaments played for trophies and experience; for rated play we guide students to the FIDE-rated events on the Gujarat calendar — see our FIDE rating guide. Any future rated event will say so in the announcement.
What should we bring on the day?
Nothing for the board — sets and clocks are provided. Bring water, a snack for between rounds, and a pen if the player records moves. The full list is in the first-tournament guide.
Can parents watch?
Yes, from the spectator area. Parents cannot stand at the boards or speak to players during a game — an arbiter's rule at every tournament, and one of the things a first event teaches.
Where are the tournaments held?
Our 2026 junior and open events were at HopUp Sports Arena in City Light, Surat; the CCC showdown was at our Vesu classroom. Each announcement carries the venue and a map link.
